Portugal’s picturesque capital is one of my favorite cities in the world. I always enjoy wandering its winding streets, taking in the stunning ocean views, and sipping endless amounts of wine.
Located on the southern edge of the country’s western coast, Lisbon (or Lisbon, as the locals call it) is an amazing mix of museums, historical landmarks, eclectic music scenes, vibrant nightlife, charming squares and cozy cafes. I fell in love with the city from the moment I arrived..
In recent years, Lisbon has become more popular, thanks to its reasonable cost of living and pleasant weather throughout the year. It is also one of the Best Cities in the World for Digital Nomads (And one of my personal favorites), with a large community of expats and remote workers.
With so many visitors, it should come as no surprise that Lisbon has a large number of hotels to choose from (although not all of them are good). To help you decide where to stay, here is my list of the best hotels in Lisbon:
1. Portugal Boutique Hotel
I love how this four-star hotel strikes the perfect balance between old-world elegance and contemporary flair. It has simple furnishings that contrast with the building’s historic architectural elements, such as arched stone doors, traditional Portuguese tiles, and wooden floors. I especially love the wood-paneled breakfast room, where they serve a complimentary breakfast made with fresh, seasonal ingredients each morning. Be sure to check out the wine cellar (you can taste wine there), and there’s also 24-hour room service in case you get hungry in the middle of the night. The staff are exceptionally helpful and make the experience feel personal, like a five-star hotel.
Each room has its own unique character, but all have a chic, calming feel, with a pillow menu (where you can choose the firmness of your pillow), double-glazed windows (for peace and quiet at night), an in-room safe and a minibar. The rooms are high-tech too, with a smart TV built into the mirror (something I find very stylish). The bathrooms are spacious, bright and new, with tiled showers, complimentary toiletries and luxurious bathrobes and slippers. This is the best place to stay in Mouraria, one of the oldest towns in Mouraria. Neighborhoods in Lisbon.
2. The house with the view windows
This cozy B&B translates to “house of windows with a view,” and the name doesn’t lie: There are stunning views from most of the windows here. The design is very cozy, with personal touches like unique artwork, fresh flowers, and an eclectic mix of antique furniture. I love that the included breakfast is served at a communal table, which makes it easy to meet other travelers (the breakfast is also delicious, featuring homemade cakes, fresh bread, croissants, and changing Portuguese specialties).
Although this B&B is located in the lively Bairro Alto area, it is on a quiet street, so you can still get a good night’s sleep. The rooms are small but have all the necessary basic amenities, such as an in-room safe, air conditioning and a TV (upon request). The large windows allow plenty of natural light in, and some rooms have small balconies. The en suite bathrooms are very spacious, with rain showers and really nice complimentary toiletries. This is a great central place to stay if you’re on a budget but want something a little more private than a hostel.
3. Bairro Alto Hotel
Housed in an 18th-century building in the Chiado district, this five-star hotel combines traditional Lisbon with cutting-edge design – sleek, contemporary lines complemented by traditional ceramic tiles and rich wood accents. The hotel’s exceptional breakfast buffet features a selection of local pastries, fresh fruit and artisanal cheeses, along with a variety of hot dishes such as Eggs Benedict. I think the rooftop bar is one of the coolest hotel bars in the city, and there’s also a fitness centre with a sauna on site.
The comfortable rooms feature luxurious bedding, elegant furnishings and floor-to-ceiling windows that allow plenty of natural light in. Each room comes with a desk, Nespresso machine, bottled purified water, pillow menu, Bluetooth speakers, safe, minibar and flat-screen TV. The spacious bathrooms are equally impressive, elegantly appointed with tiled floors, marble sinks and luxurious amenities such as large showers, luxury toiletries and cosy bathrobes. It’s the perfect place to stay if you’re looking to indulge.
4. Alegria Hotel
This 3-star boutique hotel is housed in a beautifully restored building dating back to 1865. I love that it retains its historic feel, elegantly decorated with antique Portuguese furniture. The location is great too: it’s just a few blocks west of Avenida da Liberdade, a tree-lined street known for its shopping. The hotel has a little kiosk in the park across the street where I enjoy a drink and watch the world go by. Although breakfast isn’t included, it’s worth it as it’s a nice buffet with everything from fresh Portuguese pastries to omelettes. It’s served in a cute little breakfast room too.
The rooms are comfortable and stylish, with hardwood floors, unique artwork on the walls, antique furniture, and chandeliers. I especially love the Portuguese tiles surrounding the large windows and in the spacious bathrooms. Room amenities include air conditioning, comfy bathrobes and slippers, a Nespresso machine, a flat-screen TV, an in-room safe, and a minibar. I think you get great value here. And while you’re in a quiet neighborhood, you’re within walking distance of many of the main attractions.
5. Sao Vicente Alfama Hotel
This four-star hotel is located in the medieval Alfama district, which I consider one of the most charming neighborhoods in Europe. With just 22 rooms, this elegant and sophisticated hotel feels homey and intimate. The complimentary breakfast is excellent, with a range of Portuguese pastries, cold meats, fresh fruit, omelettes and French toast.
The rooms are bright and airy, with plenty of light coming in from the windowed doors leading to the small balconies. I also really appreciate that all rooms have a writing desk (so I can get work done in my room before heading out to explore). The rooms are also high-tech, with keyless electronic doors, USB ports, wireless phone chargers, smart TVs, and built-in Bluetooth sound systems. The bathrooms are also luxurious, with en suite showers, high-quality toiletries, luxurious cotton towels, and comfy bathrobes and slippers. This is the best place to stay in Alfama in my opinion.
6. Corbo Santo Hotel
This elegant five-star hotel is housed in a Pombaline building (an 18th-century Portuguese architectural style) in the small Cais do Sodré neighborhood. There are plenty of amenities here, including a spa with a steam room, sauna, and jacuzzi, and the breakfast here is nothing short of exceptional. You’ll find a range of fresh pastries, eggs cooked to order, local cheeses, and a variety of fruits. They also offer lots of nice free perks, like daily wine tastings in the lobby, two daily walking tours, snacks you can eat on every floor, and free ice cream in the lobby. You can even get a free 20-minute massage at the spa!
Each room is different, but all feature a bright, minimalist design with a wealth of amenities. Think comfy beds, 4K TVs, a Nespresso machine, an electric kettle, a complimentary minibar, a digital safe, and a bathrobe and slippers. There’s air conditioning and soundproof windows for a relaxing stay, too. Bathrooms are spacious and modern, featuring rain showers, luxury toiletries, heated floors, and chromotherapy lighting (which can be adjusted to different colors to evoke different moods). If you want to stay somewhere where you won’t need anything, stay here.
